Tech update 12th September 2022

Almost every device we use daily relies on USB. Universal Serial Bus enables communication between devices and a host controller such as a personal computer or smartphone. It connects peripheral devices such as digital cameras, mice, keyboards, printers, scanners, media devices, external hard drives, flash drives and charges your phone and laptops.

Did you know it’s been around since 1996? Of course it’s improved loads since then.

One of the biggest improvements is that USB-C can be plugged in either way round meaning you no longer have to go through the pain of trying to plug it in one way to then turn it over and try again only to find you had it right the first time!

The latest development could speed up your work – and you won’t even need to buy any new cables.

USB 4 version 2.0 does some smart things with existing cable technology.

The big benefit is data transfer speeds twice as fast as they are right now. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

That means better displays and faster hubs.

If your USB-C cables are no more than a couple of years old, they could start to work faster before the end of the year.

That’s when the new standard is due to be introduced.

And of course older USB technology will still be compatible. Such is the beauty of USB.
