Tech update 17th October 2022
Lots of businesses rely on Microsoft Teams to communicate and collaborate with their colleagues. We certainly do in our office; it can be a powerful tool because it’s a great way to share information quickly.
New research has shown that nearly HALF of employees frequently share confidential and sensitive files on Teams.
Worse still, 51% say they’ve shared business critical information…
48% of people have sent a message they shouldn’t have, possibly even to the wrong person!
Well, were all only human and most of the time that’s not a problem if you’re only using secure work devices.
But when your people use unsecured personal devices to send files… you could have a MAJOR security issue.
So, what do I mean by an unsecured device? Well, that would be any device that your staff use to access company files, whether that be through Teams, Outlook, OneDrive etc. that isn’t owned and managed by the company.
By issuing your staff with laptops and mobiles your IT partner can ensure that adequate policies are applied to the devices to stop unauthorised access by anyone else, or to stop your staff from accidentally sending out confidential or sensitive data to people outside of your business, or even to certain people within your business.
Make sure everyone understands the risks of sharing data on personal devices. And what precautions will keep data safe. Having a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy in place which everyone staff member, reads, understands, signs, and adheres to is also essential in these circumstances.
We suggest regular cyber security awareness training for everyone. It can actually be fun and will highlight the potential dangers that are out there. It will also give your staff a good level of understanding of how to protect themselves from these threats.
