Fire

This is something none of us wants to experience. But it does happen.

There’s a small fire in your office. No-one is hurt and everyone is safe. But the damage to your workplace is unbelievable.

The flames. The heat. The smoke. And of course, the huge amounts of water used to put out the fire.

Here’s a good question – if there had been a fire in your office last night, would you feel confident you could access all of your data from a backup?

I want you to think about all your computers and specifically the data on them. Is your data as protected and backed up as it could be?

How are you sure of this?  Are you testing your backups daily?

Are you triple sure of that?

For clarity OneDrive and SharePoint do not really count as backups because as soon as a file is modified or deleted it synchronises those changes across all connected computers instantly.

One of the good aspects of the pandemic is that it has geared most business into a hybrid work from home / office environment, so if your office is taken out of action because of a fire, you should still be able to operate remotely, as long as your backup was working.

Sadly we see all too often that businesses do backup their servers, but the backup drive sits on top the server and is never swapped or taken off site so that if there was a fire it would go up in smoke along with the server.

You also need to consider your phone system.  If you are not yet on a VOIP system then you will need to call your line provider to get a divert put in place to your mobile phone.  If you are using a voip system then you can still answer calls from the app on your phone or tablet and the customer wouldn’t notice any difference.

I’ve written a new guide to show you the things you need to make a priority – this week – to keep you protected from any disaster.
